Far North Community Hospice is located in the Far North of New Zealand and covers the area from Cape Reinga to Mangamuka, North Hokianga to Taupō Bay.

Far North Community Hospice is community based with a nursing team who visit people in their home to do pain and symptom management. At the Kaitaia Hospital is a self contained unit, the Shirley Crawford Haven, located in the General Ward, for interim care and for families wanting to care for their loved ones in a supported environment.

Palliative Care Nurses are available Monday to Friday and "on call" 24/7 for emergencies that may arise after hours.

A Palliative Care Specialist visits monthly and is available to support the nursing team when and if required. 

The Hospice team is complemented with a Family Support Co-ordinator who provides support for family members / carers before and into the bereavement period. 

A Facilities Co-ordinator who oversees and manages the grounds and equipment including the vehicles and any minor repairs that may need to be done to the buildings etc.

The Hospice facebook page was set up in 2019, keeping the public informed of what is happening at Hospice.

Another service available is the Hospice Life Review service. A trained and dedicated volunteer will record, in book form, your life's story - a precious gift for family.

Far North Community Hospice has a range of loan equipment to support patient care in the home. These items include: electric beds, shower and bath stools, commodes, Spenco mattresses etc. 

Hospice does liaise closely with the multidisciplinary team i.e. Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, District Nursing, other Health Specialists, and Iwi providers to provide a continuous care regime.

Far North Community Hospice is a Charitable Trust that is partially funded by the Ministry of Health.  The balance of its operating costs is raised by sponsorship and/or fundraising.  This is not an easy task given the economic climate at present and the large area that is covered.

In May 2014 the Take 2 Hospice Shop was opened at 165 Commerce Street Kaitaia. It provides an opportunity for the Far North Community to support and give back to a service that is free to those who it need.

Hospice has a loyal group of volunteers that do an enormous amount of work, not only at the Hospice Shop but includes fundraising, grounds maintenance and taking care of the Haven at the Hospital.  Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer is welcome to come and see what it is we do. 

In August 2016 Hospice proudly opened Awhi Mai Awhi Atu (caring for me caring for you) house at the rear of the property. The house will accommodate two offices, a large meeting room and a dedicated lounge for patient / carer pamper/therapy sessions held by a registered therapist.
