Description

The primary test for cervical screening has changed to a human papillomavirus (HPV) test, with the option of self-testing.  Some wahine may still require a cervical cell sample to be taken (previously known as a smear test) - this is dependent on their screening history.

Getting screened - information for women

You can choose to go to:

  • your regular doctor or practice or
  • a Screening Support Service here in Hawke's Bay - contact us for further information

All health providers are specially trained to make sure the test is comfortable and meets your rights as a patient.  If you are feeling whakama/nervous when having your cervical screen, just tell the screen taker so they can support you.  You are welcome to bring a friend or whānau member to tautoko/support you.

We can help you find someone to take your cervical screening test.

Call us on freephone 0800 729 729 or email populationscreening@hbdhb.govt.nz

We can also help with the following on the NCSP-Register

  • updating your details
  • cervical screening queries
  • information on alternative cervical screening options in the area
  • a request for your screening history

Contact your health provider if you have any queries about your test results.
