Women’s Programme – ‘Living Free – Living Free from Abuse”

The Abuse Prevention Services women’s safety programme, Living Free, runs for 12 weeks. The programme is designed to help women find clarity about their lived experience of family violence by providing a fuller analysis of family violence, the intentions behind power and control and women's resistance to family violence. We then start to explore all aspects of healthy relationships, such as communication, respecting boundaries, healthy sexual relationships, equality and respectful relating. We also explore our identity; look at the parenting needs of children who have been impacted by family violence, connecting with our feelings such as grief and anger, and a strong focus self care and wellbeing. As a natural part of group process, women feel supported and empowered by each other which helps to create community and connection.

Service types: Abuse and violence support, Education programmes, Information and support, Support groups.

Children's services

Abuse Prevention Services offer programme and counselling to children who have been impacted by family harm. We offer a respectful and safe place for children to explore and overcome issues that may affect their lives. We aim to have children thrive in their lives. We offer support that is child centred and goes at the child’s pace. We aim to offer support that is fun, educational, and healing. For younger children (4 - 9 years) we offer play therapy. Play therapy is based on an understanding that play is the main language of children and is more effective than talk therapy in helping children to feel soothed. Children get to work through issues such as feeling powerless, anxious, worried, angry or isolated, which are common concerns for children impacted by family harm. Individual counselling and programme is offered to young people who have been impacted by family harm. All our support is individual and our team understand and hold in mind the wider challenges that young people may experience, and may bring into the therapeutic space.
