Social Service, Pacific People
Description
The Maungakiekie-Tamaki Pacific Warden (MTPWT), patrols Fortnightly on Friday night covering town centres Glen Innes, Panmure, and Onehunga and including bus stations, train stations, and parks. The East Auckland Pacific Wardens was formed in September 2011 by Richard Takapautolo and Taniela Kaveilata who both lived and worked in Tamaki. It started with 20 Pacific people from the Tongans, Samoans, Fijians, Cook Islands, Solomon Islands, Niueans, and Tokelauan.
The objectives of the Maungakiekie-Tamaki Pacific Warden Trust are:
- to contribute to the prevention of crime and victimization in the local community of Tamaki and the wider Auckland Metropolitan area
- to patrol and be the "eyes" and the "ears" of the Police and the Council in working collaboratively to:
- identify hot spots
- maintain peace and harmony within the community
- help with the reduction of youth offending especially Pacific
- prevent vandalism
- address the safety of people
- identify and prevent crime before it takes place.
We are patrolling every Friday night on our own and sometimes alongside the Police. We are looking at extending to more nights and days. We mainly cover our Tamaki Area and Central East. We help patrol at local community events like Xmas parades, Matariki, sports clubs, church events, and Police & Council events like "Pasifika Festival".
Please let us know if you would like more information on our patrolling.
