Profile
Dr Joost Breuk - Your Trusted Local GP and Skin Cancer Specialist
I come from the Netherlands and studied Medicine and General Practice in Belgium, alongside my wife, Dr. Elvira. After specialising in tropical medicine, we worked for two years in Mozambique, where we taught medical students at the university and worked in the local hospital.
For many years, I dreamt of living in New Zealand, drawn to its stunning nature and outdoor adventure. In 2010, we made Alexandra our home - a decision we’ve never regretted. Our three children love growing up here, and as a family, we enjoy hiking, biking, and running. The community in Alexandra is fantastic, and since opening our own practice in 2016, we are here to stay.
At our practice, we strongly believe in the importance of continuity of care. Seeing your own doctor each time allows us to truly get to know you, building a foundation of trust that is essential to quality healthcare. This personal connection is one of the reasons we love working in a small rural family practice.
Specialised Skin Cancer Care
I have a special interest in skin cancer medicine and completed advanced training in both Australia and New Zealand. I am now an accredited Skin Cancer Specialist and also teach for the Skin Cancer College Australasia.
We recognise the high rates of skin cancer in the region and the long waiting times for surgery in Dunedin, as well as the high costs of private treatment. This led us to offer a comprehensive skin cancer service at our own practice. We now receive government funding for surgical removal of most skin cancers for both our enrolled patients and visitors to the practice.
Visitors can also access our skin checks, total body photography and funded skin cancer surgery.
We are committed to providing high-quality, accessible healthcare, ensuring that you receive expert skin cancer treatment close to home.
