Profile

Dr Monica Liva is of Samoan and Niuean descent. She was born and raised in New Zealand and has lived in Māngere for over 30 years.

From a young age Monica was encouraged by her parents to become a doctor and she wanted to break the stereotype that Pacific people cannot achieve a degree. In 2006 she graduated from the Auckland University with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery, she also completed her fellowship in 2014.

Dr Monica Liva is living proof that with hardwork, commitment and dedication anything is possible.

Monica says, "I am so proud to hear more and more Pacific doctors graduating".

Monica has been working as a general practitioner for 8 years, she previously worked at Waikato Hospital, West Fono and prior to Turuki the Auckland South Correction Facility - Wiri Prison. She is passionate about her job and believes that compassion and communication are two key aspects to engage with patients and make a successful plan going forward.

Outside of work Monica enjoys playing social soccer, watching TV series on Netflix and taking her 3 young children to exercise at the park. She also has a desire to one day volunteer as a medical worker in developing countries including Africa.
