Dr Wal (Wasilwa) Baraza

Wal Baraza trained in general surgery in Yorkshire, UK. He completed his subspecialist training in laparoscopic colorectal and pelvic floor surgery in Auckland before taking up a consultant post at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust in 2015 and an honorary clinical lectureship at the University of Manchester.  During 7 years in the NHS he developed a particular interest in the management of early rectal cancer, pelvic floor disorders and abdominal wall herniae.  In addition to his clinical interests, Mr Baraza also has a strong portfolio in education and surgical training. He also championed medical associate professions supporting the surgical workforce, working as an advisor to the General Medical Council supporting the regulation of physician associates.

Mr Baraza moved to Auckland in April 2023 as a general and colorectal surgeon and senior lecturer at the University of Auckland.  He has expertise in the management of colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, anorectal disorders, pelvic floor pathology disorders and hernia surgery.  He is a member of the colorectal cancer, pelvic floor and abdominal wall hernia multidisciplinary teams in his public practice.  He is a member of the Associaton of Coloproctologists of Great Britain and Ireland and the European Socitey of Coloproctology.
