Description
Kaitaia Hospital is Northland DHB’s northernmost hospital. It is a general hospital serving a widely scattered population of approximately 21,000.
The 28 bed hospital has a general ward, maternity and paediatric ward with all the supporting services and provides a substantial community health service.
The hospital underwent an $11.9million redevelopment which was completed in December 2007. The hospital now includes:
- Renovated Maternity Unit
- New Occupational Therapy Department
- New Emergency Department and after-hours facility
- Enlarged Day Surgery Unit and recovery area
- A modern isolation room and refurbished general ward
- GP and outpatients’ consulting rooms
- Relocation of the Radiology Department
- Improved working areas for nurses.

Our staff at Kaitaia Hospital recognise that you know best how your body responds to illness and other life experiences and what is right and acceptable for you. We would like you to continue making decisions regarding your health and caring for yourself with our assistance and support. There will be some things that you will be able to do for yourself and others that you will need help with.
We will support your right to be fully informed about your health situation and care. Please don't hesitate to ask for more information or to question anything you don't understand. We encourage the support of a whānau/family member or friend and would be happy to discuss how you might like them involved in your care. If your child is a patient, you are welcome to stay with your child.

Visiting hours
Visitors are an important part of your stay in hospital but please remember that you are in hospital because you are ill and in need of rest and care. To enable staff to provide a quality and professional service to you and other patients, please note the following restrictions regarding visiting times:

Unless special arrangements have been made with the nurse in charge of the ward, visitors are required to leave the hospital at 8.00pm. Please ask your visitors to respect the privacy and needs of other patients, particularly if you are sharing a room. We ask that visiting children be closely supervised by parents or guardians.
Visiting after hours
After 8.00pm your visitors will only be admitted into the hospital with the consent of the nursing staff caring for you. For security reasons after hours visitors will be asked their name, address, the name of the patient and the ward they wish to visit. Security officers are available in the evening to provide assistance to visitors.
Refreshments
Sandhills Cafe, located on the lower ground floor level, is a well stocked cafe providing a wide selection of home made breakfasts, salads, sandwiches and toasted sandwiches along with a small selection of cakes, scones and fruit. Your favourite coffees, tea and hot chocolates are freshly made and a selection of beverages is available for sale. The cafe has a lovely in house or al fresco dining area to enjoy your meal.

There is a weekday bus service between Kaitaia and Whangārei Hospitals. Please click here for further information.
Kaitaia-Whangārei Shuttle Service
Home Support North is a charitable trust and provides a Community Care Shuttle Service from Kaitaia to Whangārei return. They have a wheelchair accessible van and two other vehicles to provide transport to older and disabled people in the Kaitaia area who have treatment or medical appointments in Whangārei, Kaitaia, or Auckland.
Who can use it? Older, disabled people and cancer patients in the Kaitaia area who are unable to use the Kaitaia Hospital bus and have no alternative method of transport.
The cost. The service is free. However, the drivers are volunteers and a donation to them is much appreciated.
The shuttle will run daily, Monday to Friday (subject to driver availability).

Visitors may arrange accommodation in the Whare (Whānau House). Please ask your nurse for further information.

Volunteers
People from the community health and social service agencies visit individual patients. All volunteers and official visitors to the hospital should be wearing ID badges.
Public Toilets
Public toilets are located on Level 1 adjacent to the Accident and Emergency Department and adjacent to Outpatients and the X-ray Department.

Card/coin operated telephones are available in the main foyers. Phone cards cannot be purchased in the hospital, so these will need to be brought with you.
