Midwifery Service

Description

Charisma Midwifery Collective is a group of six like-minded midwives, working in primary teams of two - Carol & Sarah, Kylie & Liz, Annette & Diane. We cover the Franklin region, looking after mothers and babies in Pukekohe, Waiuku, Tuakau and surrounding regions. We only book women who are planning to birth in a primary care setting - meaning you plan to birth either at Pukekohe Maternity Unit, or at home. We can also provide antenatal/postnatal care for women who have to birth at Middlemore Hospital for a medical reason. Each of our midwives has a routine 48-hour off-call period each week during this time your back up midwife is available for urgent care needs.

We love working at our primary birthing unit at Pukekohe. We have excellent working relationships with our core-midwifery staff working at Pukekohe.

In the case of an emergency, we transfer to Middlemore Hospital in an ambulance, where your care will usually be continued by the Middlemore staff. You will return to our care once your/your baby's condition is stable and you are once again considered 'primary care'. If you have had to birth at Middlemore Hospital, we will endeavor to have your ongoing postnatal care stay at Pukekohe as soon as possible, if that is your wish.

Staying at a birthing centre or hospital after giving birth

Your stay at a birthing centre or hospital after giving birth will usually be up to 2 days, or 2-5 days if you have had a caesarean. During this time you will have regular visits from your midwife and be supported to care and feed your baby. After the birth you will be tired and busy getting to know your new baby. Most women who have had a normal birth stay in the hospital or birth centre for 48 hours. If you have had a caesarean section, the usual hospital stay is 3-5 days. There may be an option to have your postnatal stay in a primary unit if you have given birth at hospital. Some women choose to go straight home after birth, this is called a planned early discharge. Talk to your midwife about your postnatal stay and make sure your family know what your plan is.
