Description

ADL is a not for profit organisation that aims to help young people & whānau who are dealing with alcohol & drug issues and/or mental health difficulties. 

We also offer the Thrive! Te Pae Ora service. Read more here.

ADL has offices in Dunedin, Timaru, Cromwell and Invercargill that also cover rural areas. We can see you at school, in the community or at home.

Staff

ADL is staffed by registered health practitioners.

Depending on the area the teams are Occupational Therapists, NZAC registered Counsellors, Psychologists, Social Workers, Mental Health Nurses, and DAAPANZ registered Alcohol and other Drug Practitioners.

Fees and Charges Description

Our services are fully- funded by the Southern District Health Board, South Canterbury DHB, and by the Ministry of Social Development and are free to clients and their families.

Hours

Mon – Fri 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM

Summer holiday period - offering phone support on open days. Normal services resume on 11 January 2023.

Adventure Development Counselling Programme (ADC) - Alcohol and Drug or Co-existing Addictions

ADC is a longer term program that can offer support to young people wanting more intensive support with alcohol or drug issues. It is only internally referred - please speak to an ADL staff member if this interests you or you want to know more. ADC has a focus in using activity and outdoor experiences to help develop new skills to better manage difficult times. Young people on ADC will attend counselling sessions, day activities and may be offered a 4-9 day journey. We also offer a marae-based Journey.

  2. young people experimenting with AOD, with heightened risk of developing an alcohol and/or other drug disorders

Our programmes offer a wide range of options for responding to the needs, interests and goals of the young person. The programmes are strengths based and aim to; Engage youth in positive and meaningful activity Build community support networks Support in furthering education, training and employment Support families in building strong relationships with their young person Improve life skills Our programmes are developed alongside the young person and have a large component of outdoor recreation, such as mountain biking, kayaking and rock climbing. We believe the outdoor environment is a stimulating place for young people to learn new skills, develop their strengths and give them experiences that create opportunities for learning. The programmes provide children and young people with individualised and intensive support, positive guidance, encouragement, opportunity and challenge, which assist children and young people to achieve their goals and aspirations.

Referrals can only be made through South Canterbury DHB - iCAMH Team or ADL.
