Referral Process
Arowhenua Whānau Services are privileged to be able to offer a free & confidential service supporting whānau who face challenges in relation to their mental & emotional wellbeing to persons within the South Canterbury region, regardless of ethnicity, or gender and those over the age of 13 who present with a diagnosis of mild to moderate mental health issue.
We accept self-referrals or referrals can be submitted with your approval by a whānau member, friend, GP or other community professional and we endeavour to respond within 7 days.
An initial Mental Health Assessment will be completed at the first session where needs will be identified, support clarified, and short- & long-term goals developed. Just go to the website aws.health.nz, click on referral, complete the form and send it to us. Or you can drop in and self refer. You will be seen by someone who can help you fill out a referral form.
We present all referral forms to our Mental Health Team and then make contact with the referrer or the person.

Description
The role of the Mental Health Team is to provide community-based support and education in your home, in the community or at our service bases, whilst walking alongside those of you who have identified a need to utilize our service on your journey to wellbeing.
This support is provided by our Mental Health Team.
The support we can offer may include:
- Stress/Anxiety Management
- Sleep hygiene
- Addiction & sobriety support
- Emotional growth & development management
- Mood hygiene
- Building resilience
- Problem solving techniques
- Relaxation techniques
- Mindfulness training
- Action Plans
- Referral to other health providers, if appropriate
We may communicate with other persons involved in your life but will always seek your approval first. The exception would be if your safety was in question or you were at risk.
The most common mental health issues are Depression & Anxiety. If you are presenting with any of the following, you may need to seek professional support:
Depression
- Little interest or pleasure in doing things
- Feeling down, depressed or hopeless
- Have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep or sleeping too much
- Feeling tired, unmotivated and/or lacking energy
- Have a poor appetite or find yourself over-eating
- Feeling bad about yourself
- See yourself as a failure or feel that you have let someone down
- Have trouble concentrating
- Have other people commenting that you are speaking or moving slowly
- Have people comment that you are extra fidgety or restless
- Have had thoughts of harming yourself or that you would be better off dead (SEEK HELP URGENTLY)
