Profile

Dr Emme Chacko graduated from The University of Auckland with a medical degree (MBChB) in 2003. She became a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP) in 2011 and has 20 years of mental health work experience. She practices evidence-based integrative psychotherapies. She currently holds a staff role at The University of Auckland’s medical programme as Director of Medical Student Affairs.

Emme teaches patients meta-cognitive skills using therapies like Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). MBCT is a structured programme developed for depressive disorders and has been shown, in research studies, to be as effective as being on an antidepressant. It is the treatment of choice for recurrent depression according to the latest Australian and NZ College of Psychiatrists guidelines. MBCT is brief and can be delivered in 8 individual sessions. It is also indicated for anxiety disorders, pain, and workplace/caregiver burnout states. Other options on offer include long-term psychotherapy and professional supervision.

Initial assessments will include standard psychiatric diagnostic/medication review. The focus of initial assessment is preparation to learn skills for lasting change using psychotherapy.
