Profile

Dr Matthew Jenkins is a psychiatrist based in rural Waikato, New Zealand. He has sub-specialty training in Addictions and Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry; the latter being the branch of psychiatry interested in the interface between psychiatry and other medical/physical issues. Matthew has also undertaken work within the context of psychological assessment for gender-affirming hormones/surgery. Clinically, Matthew likes to adopt a professional, yet friendly approach to his patients; one which he hopes engenders mutual trust and creates an environment of collaborative treatment planning. Matthew recognises that mental health requires a holistic approach and ascribes to the Māori model of mental health (Te whare tapa whā) which particularly emphasises the importance of family and social systems (Taha whānau). He has undertaken further training in various psychotherapeutic disciplines including:

  • motivational interviewing
  • cognitive behavioural therapy
  • hypnotherapy
