Description
Bariatric or weight loss surgery refers to a number of different procedures that can be performed to assist in significant weight loss. Ormiston Hospital & Healthcare has a skilled set of professionals who deliver weight loss surgery. This includes a dedicated team of highly experienced surgeons, a physiotherapist and nutritionist.
Weight loss surgery has proved to transform health outcomes in patients with other comorbidities. Obesity related conditions such as heart disease, asthma, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea and type II diabetes and arthritis can be debilitating for a lot of people and often prevent weight loss. Weight loss surgery can help resolve these issues, and is highly recommended when diet and exercise cannot help.
The aim of the surgery is to reduce the food-holding capacity of the stomach so the patient has a feeling of fullness after eating very little. Our patients succeed because they receive the support they need, this includes an expert dietitian and physiotherapist.
Most patients achieve good to excellent weight loss results following surgery, typically this is 50-60% of excess weight. There is no amount of weight loss that is guaranteed.
Procedures offered at Ormiston Hospital & Healthcare include:
- Gastric bypass surgery
- Gastric sleeve surgery

Procedures / Treatments
This is a permanent procedure where 80% of the stomach is removed creating a narrow tube (a sleeve) instead of the original stomach sac. It is performed laparoscopically (keyhole surgery), making this procedure minimally invasive, and normally takes 30-45 minutes. The smaller stomach restricts the amount of food that can be eaten, so you feel fuller sooner and for longer, resulting in weight loss.

A gastric bypass involves making the stomach smaller as well as changing how it connects to the small intestine. It is more invasive than the gastric sleeve procedure as the surgeon creates a small pouch at the top of your stomach, and then re-routes the lower part of your small intestine to connect directly to the new pouch. This effectively bypasses your stomach and the upper part of your small intestine. Weight loss is achieved as your stomach is now much smaller, meaning you are fuller sooner and for longer with less food. The way your body absorbs nutrients and calories is also different as your digestive tract has been altered, and this can lead to significant weight loss. Gastric bypass is a permanent procedure. It is performed laparoscopically (keyhole surgery) and typically takes 2–3 hours.
