Tim Chuang - Hip, Knee and Trauma Orthopaedic Surgeon

I am a consultant orthopaedic surgeon working at both Christchurch Public Hospital and privately at Forte Orthopaedics, operating at both St George's and Southern Cross Hospitals.

Born in Taiwan but raised and educated in Christchurch. I am an University of Auckland Alumnus and a New Zealand trained surgeon with experience in both the North and South islands. After completing my orthopaedic training in 2018, I embarked on three separate fellowships from 2019 – 2021. I started as the inaugural Tumour fellow at Middlemore Hospital before coming to Christchurch under the mentorship of Prof. Gary Hooper and Mr. Rod Maxwell for an arthroplasty fellowship. During this time, I was also the inaugural Stryker travelling fellow to Papua New Guinea as a volunteer of a medical education programme. I have most recently returned from a Trauma fellowship that focused on lower limb and pelvic/acetabular trauma at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto, Canada.

I have been back in Christchurch since August 2021 as an orthopaedic consultant at Te Whatu Ora Waitaha. I am also a supervisor for non-training orthopaedic registrars and a senior lecturer at the University of Otago school of medicine. I am grateful to be back, serving my community alongside my wife, Chuiee – who works as a GP, and our two young kids.

I have started private work at Forte, St George’s, and Southern Cross Hospitals. My areas of expertise are in hip and knee arthroplasty including robotic surgery and revision arthroplasty, pelvic and lower extremity trauma. With the current health crisis and resource limitations in the public system, I hope to provide another avenue to better serve our community.

I am also excited to announce that I am a founding member of a contemporary group of surgeons coming together to form Ōtautahi Orthopaedics later on this year, looking to provide a more complete and wider package of care of orthopaedics. Our services aim to encompass all areas of orthopaedic subspecialities including shoulder and elbow, hip and knee, foot and ankle, paediatrics, sports, and spine.
