Profile

Rajesh (Raj) Patel joined our team in February 2016 and is already very excited to be part of the Northland community. Throughout his surgical training he lived and worked all over New Zealand.   After completing his training at Auckland Hospital (2012) he spent a year in Calgary, Canada. Raj completed a fellowship in Endocrine Surgery, where he specialised in parathyroid, thyroid, and adrenal diseases.  He then spent a year in Melbourne, Australia completing a fellowship in Oncoplastic-breast surgery. He was also the honorary fellow at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, specialising in melanoma and skin cancer. Raj further advanced his endocrine skills, and obtained the skill set to competently perform ultrasound guided surgeon performed thyroid fine needle aspirations.

“I am particularly interested in ‘efficiency of care’, and how we can all provide a safer and more streamlined ‘journey’ for the patient. One of these efficiencies I can offer is the ‘surgeon performed thyroid nodule US-FNA’. I am more than happy to be referred thyroid nodules that need further surgical management. I perform the US-FNAs in my outpatient clinic.  I am also interested in parathyroid disease, which I feel is an underdiagnosed disease in NZ. I strongly encourage all family doctors to add a ‘serum calcium’ to routine blood tests for someone who has ‘vague neuro-psychiatric’ symptoms, such as lethargy, insomnia, depression. It is surprising how many will have primary hyperparathyroidism and being cured of this is something that patients will forever be grateful for.”
