Description
The Sport and Exercise Physicians at Axis Sports Medicine Specialists specialise in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of sports injuries and musculoskeletal problems. We provide a thorough and reputable service managing sport and exercise-related medical concerns for a wide range of active individuals from professional, elite and recreational athletes, sports people and dancers.
Our team of specialists are Fellows of the Australasian College of Sport and Exercise Physicians (FACSEP) and work closely with High Performance Sport NZ, Sport NZ, ACC and a number of Universities. We also work across a wide range of elite level sports and sporting bodies. Our clinical practice provides a collaborative approach to the treatment of sports injuries and illness as we work within a multidisciplinary unit of health professionals.
Axis Sports Medicine Specialists provide a comprehensive service that includes the following:
- Diagnosis and treatment of the patient’s presenting symptoms,
- An assessment of any existing chronic medical problems and their treatment,
- Education about the diagnosed condition and the possible management strategies,
- Individualised exercise prescription,
- Access to allied health professionals as needed – including physiotherapy, nutrition, massage therapy and podiatry,
- Clinical examination.
What is Sport and Exercise Medicine?
Axis Sports Medicine Specialists are sport and exercise physicians who are trained to use physical activity as a treatment strategy (“exercise as medicine”). Sport and exercise physicians are also trained to optimise the management of medical conditions that impact on exercise. Examples of these are diabetes, cardiac problems and asthma.
For more information about the specialty see here: Australasian College of Sport and Exercise Physicians.

Service types: Sports injury care. Most chronic diseases are rooted in – or even caused by – a lack of physical activity. Strong evidence shows that when people don’t exercise, they increase their risk of many health conditions. Their overall life expectancy is also shortened. But it’s not just about prevention; amongst other conditions, exercise can also be an effective part of treating a variety of conditions such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, pulmonary disease, neurological disease, diabetes, pre-diabetes, obesity and anxiety and depression. Our team are specialists in providing exercise medicine services within a structured framework to support chronic sufferers with programmes designed to improve overall health, either by preventing or managing injury, chronic conditions and diseases, or helping patients regain their previous function.

In many cases tendons will be lengthened to improve the muscle balance around a joint or tendons will be transferred to give overall better joint function. This occurs in children with neuromuscular conditions but also applies to a number of other conditions. Most of these procedures involve some sort of splintage after the surgery followed by a period of rehabilitation, normally supervised by a physiotherapist.

Our clinic brings together a range of medical and health specialists to provide a comprehensive osteoarthritis treatment plan that looks at non-surgical options to improve your condition. Otherwise known as degenerative arthritis. OA occurs when there is a breakdown of the cartilage, leaving the bones unprotected. It is very common and usually affects people as they get older. You can get it at any age and are more likely to if you have previously injured a joint, or are overweight. The symptoms can be very mild with just occasional pain with activity. Worsening symptoms include pain with activity and stiffness with rest. Joints can become swollen and restricted in movement. Joints can change shape as the bone changes in response to loss of protection. You otherwise feel well. The diagnosis is made on the basis of the history, examination findings and sometimes x-rays. The severity of joint damage seen on x-ray does not always correlate with the degree of pain you experience. Treatment includes guided exercises, weight reduction if needed, pain relief and sometimes surgery. For more information see www.arthritis.org.nz
