What is Sport and Exercise Medicine?
Axis Sports Medicine Specialists are sport and exercise physicians who are trained to use physical activity as a treatment strategy (“exercise as medicine”). Sport and exercise physicians are also trained to optimise the management of medical conditions that impact on exercise. Examples of these are diabetes, cardiac problems and asthma.
Our organisation has the largest number of Sport and Exercise Physicians in New Zealand with sixteen physicians, as well as eight registrars, orthopaedic surgeons, a dietitian, occupational therapists, and physiotherapists including specialist physiotherapists, vestibular, respiratory and pelvic physiotherapists. Registrars are fully qualified doctors who are part way through the four year advanced training programme. We also have a number of visiting orthopaedic surgeons who work out of our clinics.
As with any specialists, Sport and Exercise Physicians, Registrars and Orthopaedic Surgeons can only see patients who have been referred by other registered health practitioners. Usually this will be your general practitioner, accident and medical centre doctor, or physiotherapist. However, podiatrists, chiropractors, osteopaths, nurse practitioners, and other specialists can also provide referrals.
