Toi Te Ora Public Health

Public Service, Community

Description

Toi Te Ora Public Health's vision is lifelong health and wellbeing for all. Our purpose is to improve, promote and protect the health of the communities in the Bay of Plenty and Lakes districts.

Established in 1996, we are the public health service for the Bay of Plenty and Lakes districts. We are part of Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora, National Public Health Service and we are one of twelve local public health services across New Zealand.

We focus on the achievement of health equity, in particular for Māori.

Our name Toi Te Ora represents the idea of enduring wellbeing. Toi is the name of a celebrated Māori ancestor in the Bay of Plenty and Lakes region and ‘Ora’ is to be alive, well and healthy.

What we do

Public health is about action that protects our environments, prevents illness and injury and promotes health and wellbeing of communities.

We develop and deliver a wide range of health promotion and health protection programmes for people in the greater Bay of Plenty and Lakes districts.

Our work involves people and organisations working together to improve the health of our communities and people at risk. The focus of our work supports the social and physical environments in which we live, and delivers programmes encouraging healthy activities.
