Description

Dermatology is the branch of medicine concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the skin, hair and nails.

The skin is the largest and most visible organ of the body. It reflects the health of the body and acts as a barrier against injury and bacteria. Unfortunately, at one time or another, nearly everyone has some type of skin disease - infants, children, teenagers, adults and the elderly.

A doctor who practices dermatology is called a dermatologist.

Referral Expectations

Most skin conditions can be treated in General Practice but if you need more expert advice you are referred to a dermatologist.

Some skin conditions can be diagnosed just by looking at them. The shape, size, colour and location are all assessed, as well as any symptoms. Sometimes a biopsy has to be taken to assist in making a diagnosis. A biopsy is the removal of a small piece of the skin for examination under a microscope by a pathologist. In some cases the whole lesion will be removed and examined. This is done under local anaesthetic.

Fees and Charges Description

There are no charges for services to public patients if you are lawfully in New Zealand and meet one of the Eligibility Directions specified criteria set by the Ministry of Health. If you do not meet the criteria, you will be required to pay for the full costs of any medical treatment you receive during your stay.
