COVID-19 Screening at Taupō Hospital
All patients presenting to the Emergency Department (ED) will be screened for possible COVID-19 before entering. That includes answering questions about your current health status.
If you are considered a possible or probable COVID-19 patient then you will be taken directly to the Isolation area in ED. This area is staffed by Doctors and Nurses wearing full Personal Protection Equipment (PPE). You may be swabbed for COVID-19.
If you require admission but remain a COVID possible/probable you will be transferred to the COVID ward or paediatric isolation area in Rotorua Hospital. If you require admission but are not considered a COVID possible/probable you may be admitted to the Taupō Inpatient Unit or the appropriate specialty ward in Rotorua.
If you meet the criteria for discharge you will be discharged home and given appropriate advice on self-isolation.
The current Lakes DHB visitor policy is also relevant to Taupō ED. Visitors in ED are being restricted to minimise the risk to patients, visitors and staff.
The Emergency Department is for the treatment of medical emergencies and less urgent cases, when alternative care is not available. Your GP is better for non-urgent health matters and ongoing treatment.

Staff
The ED staff are a dedicated team of doctors and nurses who specialise in emergency medicine.
St John Friends of the Emergency Department (FEDs) support the work of our staff by providing assistance and reassurance to patients. They offer a listening ear and practical help with tasks like phone calls. They will ensure you are warm and comfortable.
