Description

The Public Health Nurses are registered nurses who collectively bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to their work.  They work to ensure the wellbeing of children, young people and their families/whānau.  They also:

  • Advocate for children, young people and their families by working alongside their families/whānau, school staff, allied health professionals and social agencies to ensure positive health outcomes
  • Organise and deliver immunisation programmes in schools
  • Follow up children and young people with identified hearing/vision needs

Fees and Charges Description

There are no charges for services to public patients if you are lawfully in New Zealand and meet one of the Eligibility Direction’s specified criteria set by the Ministry of Health. If you do not meet the criteria, you will be required to pay for the full costs of any medical treatment you receive during your stay. To check whether you meet the specified eligibility criteria, visit the Ministry of Health website www.moh.govt.nz/eligibility  For charges, please phone the Accounts Receivable Office on (09) 276 0060.

School Based Programs

Public Health Nurses are available to support schools and whanau in keeping students well. Public Health Nurses offer the following nursing support: Nursing assessments, treatment and referral on to other services for a variety of childhood health issues and hearing loss Immunisation programmes including Year 7 (11 years old) Ear health including Public Health Nurse Ear clinics Enuresis programme (Ramsey Coote Bedpad Alarms) If you have any concerns about your child's health you can contact a Public Health Nurse through your school or directly to your closest office. Newborn Hearing Screening Programme

The universal Newborn Hearing Screening Programme offers screening to all babies born in New Zealand. Within Counties Manukau District Health Board area there are screeners at all the birthing units. They attempt to screen all babies before they leave the units and, if missed, babies are seen at outpatient clinics. Any baby that doesn't complete the screen successfully will be referred to Audiology Clinic for further assessment.

Vision and Hearing Testing

The Hearing and Vision Team delivers services to 300 pre-schools and 167 schools within the Counties Manukau region. This Well Child screening programme includes: Hearing, tympanometry and vision testing for pre-school children Hearing and Vision testing for new entrants Hearing tests in Public Health Nursing Community Ear Clinics if required
