Situated on Otonga Road, our hospital is the result of a multi-million dollar development, following integration of the QE Health surgical resources within the existing Southern Cross hospital in 2009. The hospital offers services to patients in Rotorua, Taupō, Bay of Plenty and the Waikato. They can access excellent facilities that include 3 high-tech operating theatres, and a range of new and upgraded environments designed to support medical specialists and nursing teams.

Southern Cross’ Rotorua Hospital boasts 3 high-tech operating theatres, and a range of new clinical facilities for medical specialists and their patients, including comfortable and well-equipped patient rooms.  We also have purpose-built day stay facilities for those who do not require overnight accommodation. The hospital is set in quiet park-like gardens, with ample visitor parking available on site.

A wide range of services available at the hospital includes orthopaedic surgery, general surgery (including breast surgery), ophthalmology, maxillofacial and dental surgery, otolaryngology (ENT), gynaecology, urological services and diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, all backed by experienced, skilled and professional nursing teams.

During 2016, the hospital has introduced oncology services. Combining their knowledge and working together as a team, medical and radiation oncologists - including leading independent medical specialists from the Kathleen Kilgour Centre in Tauranga - will support the new service.

Medical oncology clinics and treatment will be provided in Rotorua at Southern Cross Hospital. Radiation oncology clinics, linked with radiation treatment, will be provided in Tauranga.

We are aware that we are serving an increasingly large catchment area within the Bay of Plenty and wider regions, and we continue to work to deliver quality services, not only to Southern Cross members, but also to patients with other forms of private insurance cover, those choosing to fund their surgery themselves and patients being funded by ACC and other public funding arrangements.

Here’s what you can expect from Southern Cross Hospital Rotorua:

• To make your stay as comfortable as possible, each room has its own en suite complete with toilet and shower, as well as a television (including channels 1-3, plus a selection of SKY TV channels), and serviced daily with clean towels and toiletries as required.
• The Day Stay Unit is an open plan area that is designed to comfortably meet the needs of patients that do not need to stay in hospital overnight. For patients’ convenience, newspapers and magazines, TV, quiet music and food and beverages are all a feature of our day stay facilities.
• We provide nourishing, quality meals for overnight patients and can cater for special dietary requirements on request. We also provide light refreshments and sandwiches for day stay patients.
• Visiting hours are between 10am and 8pm – although other times may be arranged with your nurse. If you would like more rest and restriction to the number of visitors, please tell your nurse.
• We are able to accommodate a parent who wishes to ‘room’ with their child, so please talk to the nurse about this on admission (there is a small cost involved). Meals can be provided for parents who room in.
• A car park is available within the hospital grounds, and visitors and patients are very welcome to use this area.
• The hospital is smoke-free and has a private courtyard garden available for patients and visitors.
• Privacy and confidentiality are important elements of the service we provide. Our aim is to ensure that your privacy is maintained at all times.
• Facilities for making tea and coffee are available at reception and in the ward, and our patients and visitors are invited to make use of these.
